Why Shade Structures Are Essential in Utah's High-Altitude Sun

Utah's UV is no joke: Utah's elevation puts the Wasatch Front in one of the highest UV-exposure regions in the continental U.S. — up to 30% more intense than coastal cities at the same latitude. Without shade, your deck or patio is unusable from roughly 1pm to 5pm in summer.

Expand your usable outdoor square footage: Adding a pergola or patio cover effectively doubles the hours per day your outdoor space is usable. That's real lifestyle ROI: hosting dinners, working from the deck, kids playing outside in July without sunburn risk.

The right structure for the right job: Pergolas (slatted roofs) filter sun and look great — but don't block rain. Patio covers (solid roofs) provide full weather protection but feel more enclosed. Awnings (retractable fabric) give you flexibility and the lowest install cost. We help you pick the right one.

Materials we install: Cedar and pressure-treated wood pergolas, powder-coated aluminum pergolas, Alumawood patio covers, custom structural steel, retractable Sunbrella® awnings, and motorized aluminum louvered roof systems with adjustable slats that close fully for rain and open for full sun.

Why Eremos

What Sets Our Pergolas & Awnings Apart

Most shade structures fail because they're under-engineered for Utah's wind and snow loads. Ours don't.

Structural Pergolas, Not Kits

Big-box pergola kits are designed for mild climates. Our pergolas are engineered for Wasatch Front wind gusts and snow loads — proper post sizing, structural beams, and footing depths.

Integrated Deck + Pergola Design

A pergola designed at the same time as the deck is structurally and aesthetically tighter than a pergola added later. We can do either — but the combined design is always cleaner. We pull pergola and patio cover permits across American Fork, Lehi, Orem, Provo, and Salt Lake City regularly.

Lighting, Power & Plant Integration

Integrated low-voltage lighting, outdoor outlets for heaters or fans, and built-in support for climbing wisteria or grape vines — designed in from day one, not retrofit later.

Our Process

How We Build Your Pergolas & Awnings

From shade goals to engineered structure in four clear steps.

1

Free Sun & Site Analysis

We assess your sun exposure, existing deck or patio, home architecture, and how you actually want to use the space.

2

Structure Type & Material Selection

We help you choose between pergola, patio cover, awning, or louvered roof — and walk through wood vs. aluminum vs. steel options.

3

Permitting & Engineering

Many Utah cities require permits for permanent shade structures over a certain size. We handle the engineering and plan submittals.

4

Build & Final Walkthrough

Footings, posts, beams, roof, lighting, and any integrated electrical — installed cleanly and walked through before signoff.

FAQs

Pergolas & Awnings: Common Questions

Real answers from Utah homeowners we've worked with.

What's the difference between a pergola, patio cover, and awning?

A pergola has an open-slat roof that filters sunlight but doesn't block rain. A patio cover has a solid roof — aluminum, wood, or shingled — that provides full weather protection. An awning is a retractable fabric extension, typically attached to the house, that you can extend or retract on demand. Each has different cost, maintenance, and use-case profiles.

How much does a pergola cost in Utah?

Basic wood pergolas start around $3,500–$6,000 for an 8×10 attached pergola. Premium aluminum or steel structures run $8,000–$15,000. Louvered roof systems (adjustable slats) range from $15,000–$30,000 depending on size. Patio covers with solid roofs typically cost $100–$150 per square foot installed.

Can a pergola be attached to my house?

Yes — attached pergolas use a ledger board similar to a deck, anchored into the home's framing with proper flashing. They're slightly less expensive than freestanding pergolas and integrate cleanly with existing decks or patios.

Will a pergola block rain or snow?

A traditional slat-roof pergola will not block rain or snow — that's by design. If you need weather protection, you want a solid patio cover, a louvered roof (which closes for rain), or a polycarbonate-roofed pergola variant. We help you make this choice based on how you plan to use the space.

Are retractable awnings worth it in Utah?

For most homeowners, yes. Retractable awnings give you full sun in cooler months and full shade in summer. They're also the lowest-cost shade option ($5,000–$10,000 typical install) and don't require permanent foundations. The downside: they need to be retracted before snowstorms and high winds.

What's the best material for a pergola in Utah?

For longevity, powder-coated aluminum and structural steel hold up best in Utah's UV and freeze-thaw cycles. Cedar looks beautiful but needs re-staining every 2–3 years. Pressure-treated wood is the most affordable but requires the most maintenance. Most clients prioritizing low maintenance choose aluminum.

Can you add lighting and outlets to my pergola?

Yes — integrated low-voltage LED lighting, ceiling fans, outdoor outlets, and even speakers can all be designed into the structure from the start. Wiring runs cleanly inside posts and beams rather than retrofit later.

Do retractable awnings require maintenance?

Minimal — wipe down the fabric a couple times a year, retract before storms or sustained high winds, and inspect the motor and arms annually. Sunbrella® fabrics are fade-resistant for 10+ years under direct Utah sun.
